If this happens while joining a friend or private server, first check the server's access list and your private-server settings. Only move to network or device troubleshooting after you know the permission side is correct.

FIX 1
Check whether you are joining a private or VIP server
If the server is private, the owner must allow your account to join. Ask them to confirm that you are invited or on the allowed-user list. A copied link by itself does not guarantee access.

Check your private-server privacy setting
Open Settings, then Privacy & content restrictions, Visibility & private servers, and Private servers. Make sure your account allows the relevant audience to add you to private servers. Available choices can vary by age and region.

Have the owner re-check your account and invitation
Make sure the owner added the account you are actually signed into. If they are using a link, have them copy the current link from the private-server configuration and send it again.

Try the same experience in a public server
If a public server works, that strongly points back to the private server's permissions or availability. If public servers fail too, the problem may be broader than Error 524's usual permission path.

If Error 524 appears when you click Join on a friend
Check both the friend's current-experience visibility and whether their server is private. If their profile does not show Join Experience at all, fix visibility first. If the button appears but Error 524 follows, focus on server permission.
NOT 524?
Error 279 / ID 17 is a different problem
If Roblox says it failed to connect rather than saying you do not have permission, use the Error 279 checklist instead. That path focuses more heavily on Roblox status, the app, network, and device support.
